Understanding Lipedema

Lipedema tissue is abnormal adipose (fat) tissue that develops due to a chronic disorder of fat metabolism, connective tissue, and the lymphatic and vascular systems. Unlike normal body fat, lipedema tissue is biologically active, painful, resistant to traditional weight-loss methods, and prone to inflammation.
What is Lipedema?
Progression: Stages and TypesÂ
Lipedema progresses over time. Staging is based on skin texture and underlying tissue.
Stages of Lipedema:Â
Â

Progression is Personal
-
Every woman progresses in different ways and at different speeds
-
Not all women progress through every stage.Â
-
Existing health factors  can influence progression.
What Influences Progression?
-
Hormonal changes (puberty, pregnancy, peri-menopause, menopause)
-
GeneticsÂ
-
Inflammation
-
Lymphatic function
Types of Lipedema:Â
Â
Lipedema is classified by areas of the body that are affected. A lipedema diagnosis can include one type or a combination of types depending on the progression..

The
